The Wild Horses of Alberta Society (WHOAS) has worked to protect and preserve Alberta wild horses since 2002. Its first goal is to keep wild horses wild and free while advocating for humane management of the population. When horses are injured, abandoned, in distress or cannot safely remain on the landscape, WHOAS operates a rescue and handling facility where horses can receive veterinary care, rehabilitation and training before carefully screened adoption when appropriate. The society also provides public education and advocates for Alberta wild horses.
