Beef Packaging Options

Packaging protects the finished product and affects freezer storage, portioning and customer convenience. The options available to your customers depend on the processor.

Vacuum packaging

Vacuum packaging removes much of the air around the product and seals it in plastic. It allows customers to see the product and is commonly used for steaks, roasts and other cuts.

A damaged seal can reduce the protection provided by the package, so customers should inspect packages when organizing their freezer.

Freezer paper

Some processors use coated freezer paper or other wrapping systems. Proper wrapping protects meat from air exposure and freezer damage.

Ground beef package size

Ask whether customers can select package sizes such as approximately one-pound or larger packages. Household size and cooking habits can make this choice surprisingly important.

Package steaks for the way people cook

Customers may be asked how many steaks they want in each package. A household of two may prefer different packaging from a large family.

Packaging is part of the customer experience.

The animal may be excellent, but unclear labels or inconvenient package sizes can still frustrate a customer.

Labels and claims

Food labels and production claims must meet applicable Canadian requirements. Claims should be accurate, truthful and not misleading. Producers should not add claims such as organic, raised without added hormones or other production statements simply because they sound appealing.

Ask before promising

If customers request special labels, package sizes or processing, confirm that the processor can provide them before including those options on your order form.
