Explaining Animal Care Practices
Customers asking about animal welfare are often trying to understand what daily life looks like for cattle on the farm. Specific examples are more useful than simply saying animals are “humanely raised.”
Explain everyday care
Depending on your operation, useful information may include:
- Access to pasture, pens or other appropriate environments
- Water and nutrition
- Winter feeding and weather protection
- Calving management
- Health monitoring
- Vaccination programs
- Parasite management
- Handling methods
- Veterinary care
- Transportation practices
Low-stress handling can be described specifically
If your operation uses particular stockmanship techniques, handling facilities or training to reduce unnecessary stress, explain them.
A concrete description is more informative than an undefined welfare label.
Responsible care includes the farm, transportation, livestock handling and the transition to processing.
Medical care is part of welfare
Consumers sometimes assume that avoiding all medications is automatically better animal care. In practice, sick and injured cattle may require treatment.
Explain how your operation balances preventive management, veterinary care and any production claims you make.
Don’t imply certification you don’t have
If your farm participates in a recognized animal-care, quality-assurance or certification program, identify it accurately. If it does not, describe your practices without implying independent certification.
