Buying Bison Direct From an Alberta Producer
Buying bison directly from a producer can give you a closer connection to the farm, but purchasing arrangements vary widely. Ask how the animal, processing and final meat package are handled before placing an order.
Start with what is actually for sale
Some producers sell individual frozen cuts or meat boxes. Others may offer larger quantities. Ask what purchase formats are currently available rather than assuming bison is sold like bulk beef.
Understand the price
Find out whether the quoted price is per package, per pound, based on carcass weight or calculated another way. Also ask what processing, delivery or other charges are included.
Ask who processes the animal
The processing route matters when meat is being sold to consumers. Ask the producer where the bison is processed and how the final packaged meat reaches you.
Ask about the production practices you care about
Feeding, finishing, herd health, handling and other practices vary by producer. Direct buying gives consumers an opportunity to ask specific questions.
Plan for pickup and storage
Confirm pickup location, delivery options, package sizes and freezer space before ordering a large quantity.
