Dewormers and Parasite Control

Parasites are part of livestock management. Cattle can be affected by
internal parasites such as gastrointestinal worms and external parasites
such as lice and other pests.

Why parasites matter

A significant parasite burden can affect an animal’s health, comfort,
growth and productivity. Producers therefore monitor and manage parasite
risk as part of herd health.

What are dewormers?

Dewormers, also called anthelmintics, are veterinary products used to
control susceptible internal parasites. Other products may be used for
external parasites.

Not every farm follows the same schedule

Some operations use scheduled parasite treatments. Others use targeted
treatment based on risk, season, herd history, testing or veterinary advice.

Management can also play a role

Grazing management, stocking density, pasture rotation and other husbandry
decisions can influence parasite exposure, although management alone does
not eliminate every parasite problem.
