Provincial vs. Federal Inspection
You may hear an Alberta processor described as provincially inspected or
federally inspected. Both operate within regulatory systems, but the
jurisdiction and markets they can serve are different.
Provincially licensed facilities
Alberta licenses meat facilities that operate under the provincial meat
inspection system. Meat produced through these inspected operations can be
sold and distributed according to the rules applying to provincially
inspected meat.
Federally licensed establishments
Federally licensed meat establishments operate under federal requirements
administered by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency. Federal licensing is
particularly important when meat enters interprovincial or international
trade.
Why this matters to farm-direct customers
A local farmer selling inspected beef entirely within Alberta may use a
provincially licensed abattoir. Federal inspection is not automatically a
measure of whether the animal was raised better or whether the beef will
taste better.
What about on-farm slaughter?
Alberta also permits slaughter under specific on-farm slaughter rules.
Meat produced through an On-Farm Slaughter Operation is uninspected and is
subject to restrictions that are very different from commercially sold
inspected meat.
mean “uninspected.” Alberta’s provincial meat inspection system is an
inspection system separate from federal licensing.
