Beef Packaging Options for Processors
Packaging is the customer’s final physical connection with the processing facility. Good packaging protects the product, makes the freezer easier to organize and helps customers identify what they purchased.
Vacuum packaging
Vacuum packaging removes much of the air surrounding the product before sealing it in plastic. Customers can see the cut and the compact packages can be convenient for freezer organization.
Seal integrity is important. Damaged packages should be handled according to appropriate food-safety guidance.
Freezer wrapping
Freezer paper and other wrapping systems can also provide effective protection when properly applied.
Explain which packaging methods your facility offers rather than allowing producers to advertise options that are unavailable.
Package size matters
Customers may have preferences for:
- Steaks per package
- Ground beef package weight
- Roast size
- Family-size versus smaller packages
Clear labels save frustration
Customers should be able to identify packages without opening them. Applicable food labelling requirements must also be followed.
Give farm-direct producers an up-to-date list of packaging options, specialty products and additional charges they can share with customers.
Production claims need support
If labels include claims about production methods, those claims must be accurate, truthful and not misleading. Processors and producers should clarify responsibility for supplying and substantiating such claims.
