Mobile Butcher vs. Licensed Abattoir

Both mobile butchers and abattoirs slaughter livestock in Alberta, but they serve very different purposes under the provincial meat-inspection system.

Mobile butcher

A licensed mobile butcher travels to the animal owner’s land and performs the slaughter there.

The meat is uninspected and is restricted to consumption by the animal owner and members of their immediate household.

It cannot be sold or further distributed.

Licensed abattoir

An abattoir operates under a different licence. Government inspection services are provided for slaughter conducted through the inspected system.

Meat produced through the appropriate inspected abattoir system can be sold for human consumption, subject to applicable requirements.

Commercial sale No Yes, subject to applicable requirements
Primary purpose Owner household consumption Commercial food system
There is also such a thing as a mobile abattoir.

Alberta’s abattoir licence includes multi-location or mobile abattoirs. A mobile abattoir should not be confused with a Mobile Butcher Licence.

Which one does a producer need?

Start with the intended destination of the meat.

If the beef is intended for commercial sale, the applicable inspected processing route must be used.

If an owner wants their own animal slaughtered for household consumption, a licensed mobile butcher may provide an alternative route.
