Selling Beef at Farmers Markets
Requirements can change and individual circumstances differ. Always verify current requirements with the Government of Alberta, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency and other applicable authorities before selling or distributing meat.
Farmers markets can connect beef producers directly with local customers, but selling at a market does not remove the requirements that apply to commercially sold meat.
The beef still needs an appropriate commercial processing route
Meat sold or distributed in Alberta must come from inspected slaughter or processing facilities as applicable.
Uninspected meat produced through private-use slaughter routes cannot simply be brought to a farmers market for sale.
Temperature control matters
Frozen and refrigerated meat needs appropriate temperature control during storage, transportation, display and sale.
Your market may also have rules governing freezer equipment, electrical connections, vendor setup and food handling.
Labels still matter
Packaging and labels should meet the requirements applicable to the product and manner of sale.
Production claims such as grass-fed, organic or raised without added hormones must also be accurate and not misleading.
Confirm both government requirements and the individual farmers market’s vendor rules before arriving with product.
Ask the market before booking
Different markets may have their own application requirements, insurance requirements and operational policies.
Ask what documentation the market requires from meat vendors and what equipment is permitted.
If selling across provincial borders
Federal requirements can apply when food is prepared for interprovincial trade. A business expanding beyond Alberta should verify the applicable CFIA requirements before making the change.
