Selling beef from Alberta into another province is not simply a longer local delivery. Interprovincial food trade falls within Canada’s federal food regulatory framework.

Federal requirements enter the picture

The Safe Food for Canadians Regulations establish requirements for food prepared for interprovincial trade and export.

For meat products, the slaughter and preparation chain is particularly important.

Slaughter for interprovincial trade

CFIA states that a licence is required to slaughter food animals when the derived meat products are intended to be sent or conveyed from one province to another or exported.

Processing, packaging and labelling

Manufacturing, processing, treating, preserving, grading, packaging or labelling food for interprovincial trade can also require a Safe Food for Canadians licence.

Meat products have additional sector-specific requirements.

Do not assume provincially inspected beef can automatically be shipped commercially anywhere in Canada.

Confirm the federal requirements that apply to the slaughter establishment, processor and your own business activities before advertising interprovincial delivery.

Sole distribution is treated differently

CFIA guidance distinguishes simply trading or distributing food across provincial borders from activities such as manufacturing, processing, packaging or labelling it for interprovincial trade.

That distinction is one reason producers should use CFIA’s current licensing guidance for their specific business rather than relying on a simplified yes-or-no rule.

Online orders count too

An order placed online does not avoid interprovincial rules. The destination and the activities performed on the food remain relevant.

Check before expanding

Before opening nationwide shipping, confirm:

where your cattle are slaughtered
where the beef is processed
who packages and labels it
who holds any required federal licence
how traceability requirements are met
how temperature control will be maintained
