Who Regulates Beef in Alberta?

There is no single organization responsible for every part of Alberta beef production. Different authorities and organizations have different roles.
Government of Alberta
Alberta administers the provincial meat-inspection system and licences several types of slaughter and meat-processing operations.
This includes provincially licensed abattoirs and Alberta’s private-use slaughter categories.
Canadian Food Inspection Agency
CFIA administers and enforces federal requirements in areas including federally regulated food establishments, interprovincial and international food trade, food labelling, livestock traceability and aspects of animal health.
Health Canada
Health Canada establishes health and safety policies and standards in areas including veterinary drugs and maximum residue limits.
Canadian Beef Grading Agency
The Canadian Beef Grading Agency delivers livestock and carcass grading services under Canada’s grading framework.
Beef grading is not mandatory and should not be confused with meat inspection.
Animal-care standards
The National Farm Animal Care Council develops Codes of Practice through a multi-stakeholder process. The Beef Cattle Code provides nationally developed guidance concerning the care and handling of beef cattle.
A question about an Alberta slaughter licence, a beef label, livestock identification, veterinary-drug use and carcass grading may involve different authorities.
