Buying Chicken Direct From an Alberta Producer
Buying chicken directly from an Alberta producer gives consumers an opportunity to learn who raised the birds, how they were managed and where the finished poultry was processed.
Understand what is being sold
Some farms sell whole frozen chickens, while others may offer individual cuts, mixed boxes or seasonal pre-orders. Ask whether birds are sold at a fixed price, by weight or through another pricing arrangement.
Ask about production practices
If these practices matter to you, ask how the birds are housed, whether they have outdoor access, what they are fed, whether they are vaccinated and how illness or injury is managed.
Do not assume one production term answers all of these questions.
Ask where the birds are processed
Processing is an important part of a farm-direct poultry purchase. Ask where slaughter and processing take place, what inspection framework applies to the meat being sold and whether processing costs are included in the advertised price.
Plan for seasonal availability
Smaller poultry farms may raise birds in seasonal batches rather than producing chicken continuously throughout the year. Deposits and advance reservations can help producers plan flock size and processing dates.
Ask when orders open and how long finished birds can be held before pickup.
