Organic is more than a general description of natural farming. In Canada, organic claims operate within a certification and regulatory framework.
Organic has defined requirements
Products represented as organic must meet the requirements that apply to the claim and market in which they are sold.
Canada’s federal organic system is known as the Canada Organic Regime.
Certification matters
Where the federal organic regime applies, products making organic claims must meet certification requirements through an accredited certification system.
The Canada Organic logo
Use of the Canada Organic logo is controlled. Products must meet the applicable organic-content and certification requirements before the logo can be used.
“Organic” is not a synonym for other beef claims
Organic certification should not automatically be substituted for separate descriptions such as:
- grass-finished
- pasture-raised
- regenerative
- local
- no added hormones
Each term communicates something different.
