Regenerative Ranching

Regenerative ranching generally focuses on improving the function and
resilience of the land while producing livestock. It is better understood
through actual practices than through the word alone.

Managing grazing

A regenerative grazing plan may control when cattle enter a pasture, how
long they remain there and how much recovery time the plants receive before
being grazed again.

Soil and plant goals

Ranchers may aim to maintain living roots, increase plant diversity, improve
water infiltration, protect soil cover and build resilience during drought
or heavy rainfall.

Cattle can be part of the system

Grazing animals consume plants, return nutrients through manure and urine,
and affect plant competition and residue. How those effects are managed is
central to many regenerative systems.

There is no single regenerative ranch

Climate, soil, rainfall, existing vegetation and business needs vary.
Practices that work on one Alberta ranch may not be appropriate on another.
