Understanding Feedlots

The word “feedlot” is often used without much explanation. Understanding
what happens in a feedlot makes it easier to compare conventional beef
production with farm-direct alternatives.

What is a feedlot?

A feedlot is a managed facility where cattle are grouped and fed formulated
rations, commonly during the finishing stage of beef production.

Why are cattle sent there?

Feedlots allow feed, water, animal health and finishing to be managed at
scale. Higher-energy rations can help cattle reach market condition more
quickly than many forage-only systems.

Did feedlot cattle spend their whole lives there?

Usually not. Many cattle entering feedlots began life on cow-calf ranches
and spent months grazing pasture before moving through backgrounding or
finishing systems.

Management varies

Feedlots vary enormously in size, design, stocking, bedding, veterinary
protocols, feed programs and handling systems. The word itself does not
describe every detail of how the cattle were managed.
